How Parimer Scientific and Luna Labs are Advancing Post-Operative Care Through Strategic Partnership

Luna Labs thrives on partnerships that help us accelerate our solutions where they matter most. Our AeroVeil team joined forces with Parimer Scientific to fast-track the development of AeroVeil™, our groundbreaking sprayable hydrogel—a technology designed to prevent post-operative adhesions. These adhesions form after 90% of surgical procedures and are the leading cause of infertility in women.

Developing a Sprayable Hydrogel for Post-Operative Care

Luna Labs’ biotech team developed an innovative barrier film derived from chitosan, engineered specifically to prevent post-surgical adhesions. While the initial flat-sheet format demonstrated strong potential in early applications, clinical feedback from surgeons highlighted an opportunity to enhance the technology’s versatility. Specifically, surgeons noted that conforming flat sheets to complex anatomical surfaces presented practical limitations during procedures.

Responding to this clinical insight, the team advanced their research to develop a sprayable hydrogel formulation. This next-generation approach showed exceptional promise in preclinical studies. To optimize the path toward FDA approval and commercialization, Luna Labs sought to complement their strong research foundation with additional expertise in regulatory strategy and scaled production capabilities. This strategic outlook led to their exploration of partnership opportunities and their introduction to Parimer Scientific.

Finding Creative Solutions

Parimer worked closely with Luna Labs to modify their processes and ensure regulatory compliance while maintaining the product’s integrity. Key challenges addressed included:

  • Maintaining molecular weight while making the product water-soluble
  • Overcoming sterilization hurdles without degrading the molecular structure
  • Producing the product under GMP-compliant processes to support testing in a swine model to refine dosing and usability
  • Gathering critical data to support biosafety and efficacy testing for FDA’s Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) and Premarket Approval (PMA) processes.

Luna Labs plans to manufacture the hydrogel to support clinical testing and is exploring the addition of drugs to enhance performance.

Luna Labs partnership with Parimer exemplifies the impact of collaboration in advancing innovative solutions. By combining Luna Labs’ visionary R&D with Parimer’s expertise in scalable manufacturing and regulatory compliance, the sprayable hydrogel product is on its way to success.

Parimer recently featured this collaboration as an on-line case study, highlighting how strategic partnerships can accelerate medical innovation. Find out more about Parimer Scientific and their work as a drug substance development company.
