Virginia recently celebrated its inaugural Life Sciences Week as proclaimed by Governor Glenn Youngkin. The celebration highlights the Commonwealth’s emergence as a global hub for biotechnology and life sciences innovation, home to six leading R1 research institutions, a dynamic life sciences industry, and a growing biotech workforce.

“Life Sciences Week recognizes what we have long known: the Commonwealth is becoming a biotech powerhouse,” said Chris Tison, Luna Labs’ Director of Biotech. “At Luna Labs, we remain committed to delivering breakthrough biotechnologies that protect and improve the lives of warfighters and civilians.”

In healthcare, Luna Labs has developed TrueClot® advanced bleeding control training systems, Dislotech™ Joint Reduction Trainers for orthopedic procedures, and even flexible electrodes that create better connections to damaged nerves for advanced prosthetics. Our novel vaccine and therapeutic delivery platform (NanoVac) and sprayable hydrogel for reducing post-operative adhesions (AeroVeil) represent significant advances in patient care and treatment.

For warfighters, we are addressing specific and unique challenges faced by military personnel. Our 3WAVES virtual motion systems enhance flight simulation training. Other innovations  include sensors and analytics for real-time physiologic health monitoring, intelligent wearable support systems designed for mitigating chronic pain in aviators, and even automated life preserver units. All are focused on protecting the health and safety of those who serve.

As part of Life Sciences Week, James Garrett, CEO at Luna Labs, participated in Governor Youngkin’s roundtable focused on positioning Virginia as a national leader in biotechnology innovation. This collaborative discussion between industry leaders and state officials exemplifies the public-private partnerships that drive Virginia’s success in the life sciences sector, creating an environment where innovative products can reach those who need them most. Concurrently, the Governor announced his new Lab-to-Launch initiative, a groundbreaking university commercialization program designed to double the number of startups spinning out from Virginia’s research universities annually through standardized licensing agreements and enhanced private sector collaboration.

Virginia Life Sciences Week reminds us that innovation is about improving lives and building a healthy future. At Luna Labs, we continue our work to support Virginia’s biotech sector and lead through life science innovation.
